What are constellations? Why did humans draw pictures in the sky? How did constellations help people? Why do the constellations seem to move in the night sky? These were some of the questions we explored in our solar system unit. Enjoy some pictures of the fifth grade students exploring constellations in the Star Lab.
Students participated in an activity to help them better understand the vast distances between the planets in our solar system. Using toilet paper rolls (thanks for the donations!), students counted TP squares to mark each planet to better visualize the distances between heavenly bodies.
Students built scale models of the solar system with Play-Dough. Students scaled the planets to gain a better sense of the size of the planets. The scale models allowed us to discuss the different volumes of the planets. Students were shocked and surprised to see how small the planet Earth was in comparison with the gas giants in our solar system.
As we close up our unit on the human body systems, our class has embarked on the creation of homemade Operation games. Each group is assigned a particular body system and they build their own version of the board game around their system. The games actually work and the kids design the circuitry. This is the site you will use to complete your letter to the Human Body Corporation and to complete your "Wanted" poster.
As we move into adaptive traits, students had the opportunity to discover why particular physical characteristics have adapted to their environment over time. Students had to record their trial times, find averages and create a bar graph with a proper interval. |
